AC Tips for Winston-Salem

Hot summer weather in the Winston Salem area means that cooling bills are inching toward their annual peak. You can reduce your AC’s load in Winston with these energy saving tips, allowing you to spend less on cooling this summer.

 Improve Your “Envelope”

The way energy flows between the interior and exterior of your house – often referred to as the building envelope – has an enormous effect on how hard your air conditioner has to work to keep you cool. There are quite a few ways you can improve your building envelope.

  • Install awnings over windows to reduce the warming effects of the sun. South-facing windows are the most important, since they receive the most sunlight.

  • Make sure your home is well insulated.

  • Find and seal air leaks in your home. Leaks commonly occur around windows, doors, vents, soffits and wiring holes.

  • Reduce the Internal Load

Heat doesn’t just enter your house from the outside. You can ease your AC’s load by reducing the amount of heat you introduce into your living space.

  • Shut off unnecessary lights, electrical appliances and equipment.

  • Only use heat-producing appliances like dishwashers, clothes washers and dryers during the cooler hours of morning and evening.

  • Use exhaust fans to remove heat from kitchens and baths.

  • Limit use of your oven and stove as much as possible. Instead, cook with a microwave or do some grilling outside.

  • Maintain Your AC

Keep your air conditioner itself in tip-top shape to keep it running efficiently.

  • Change the air filter every one to three months, or whenever it gets dirty.

  • Schedule annual maintenance with a certified technician.
